For nearly 30 years, Interfaith Paths to Peace (IPP) has been committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all, aligned with our mission focused on violence reduction, racial equity, and cross-cultural peacebuilding. In our work, we give voice to those who strive for justice. That’s why the story in last week’s Courier Journal on the investigation and report into Jud Hendrix, a former pastor at Covenant Community Church, inspired us to take immediate action.
The investigation concerned allegations of sexual misconduct by Mr. Hendrix when he was Pastor of Covenant Community Church more than ten years ago. These allegations came as a shock to us at IPP. Mr. Hendrix had also been employed with IPP over the last several years, but we were unaware of any issues that were raised in the investigative report.
We believe the community must rally in support of all victims of sexual misconduct or abuse on the part of any individuals in a position of trust. Sexual misconduct and abuse of power is a grave violation of trust and dignity, and we unequivocally stand with those at Covenant Community Church who have been affected. We heard the voices of the survivors loud and clear as they had the courage to come forward and express painful experiences. We acknowledge their bravery and respect their privacy.
We want to make it clear that Mr. Hendrix is no longer an employee or consultant with IPP. Upon receipt of the investigative report, we immediately took steps to make sure he is not involved in any capacity in future initiatives, programs or events affiliated with IPP. His actions, as described in these allegations, are completely antithetical to the values and mission of our organization. We are dedicated to maintaining a culture of respect, safety and equity. We DO NOT and WILL NOT tolerate any form of abuse of power or sexual misconduct.
We will work with our community partners—and all those who wish to join us--to ensure that patterns of abuse are more easily recognized, that abusers are not able to move freely throughout our community, and that victims are encouraged to speak their truth. We need to create more safe spaces for healing, expressing our collective grief and renewing our hopes for continued paths for peace and justice.
We are grateful for the support of our community as our staff and volunteers navigate this challenging time. We will remain steadfast in praying for healing and justice for all who have suffered or may be experiencing deep emotions at this time.
Together, we will continue to strive for a more safe, just and equitable world for everyone.
With deep sincerity,
